A pair of series

Birth rate and fertility

Births per 1,000 people beside children per woman. Two ways to count new people — not interchangeable.

Birth rate can fall while Fertility is flat if the population ages. For the stock, still read Population and Net migration.

Open both in a slice

Birth rate

Live births per 1,000 people. Not [fertility] — one year, one rate.

The file

Live births per 1,000 people in a given year. Annual from 1960; same geos as Fertility.

The indicator

SP.DYN.CBRT.IN is a flow rate, not children per woman. Rising Fertility and falling population can still mean a lower birth rate.

What the numbers show

Poland fell from ~16 to ~8 per 1,000; Germany and the US are lower still. Read with Fertility, Births (GUS) and Maternal mortality.

Fertility

Children per woman. Poland 1.14 — below replacement, like DE and the US.

The file

Total fertility rate, children per woman, annual from 1960.

The indicator

SP.DYN.TFRT.IN is a hypothetical lifetime average, not births this year. For the stock you still need Population.

What the numbers show

Replacement is about 2.1. Poland fell from ~3.0 to 1.14; Germany 1.36; US 1.63; world 2.19. That is the main future drag, before Net migration.
